Emily ShankEmily started out in the education field by pursuing a BA in Mathematics Education from Olivet Nazarene University. She then earned an MA in Biblical Languages from Gordon-Conwell Theological Seminary, where she met her husband, Jonathan. They have one daughter, Lily, and a puppy, Luther.
After earning her master’s degree, she taught in three brick-and-mortar schools: an urban public school, a rural public school, and a Christian school. She taught grades ranging from seventh to twelfth. From there, she took the leap into the cyber education world and found her home at 21st Century Cyber Charter School (21CCCS) in Pennsylvania.
At 21CCCS, they create their own curriculum to meet the state standards as well as the goals of their students. Since the first year Emily started teaching there, creating their own in-house curriculum really intrigued her. She had the opportunity to create math courses each year over the summer while she taught during the year. After doing this process for eight years, 21CCCS promoted her to a full-time mathematics content developer.
Technology is integrated into just about everything Emily does on a daily basis. Moodle is the Learning Management System (LMS) that she uses to create lessons and assignments. Moodle’s interactive quiz features are fantastic for piquing the interest of students. She also uses web-based educational tools such as H5P.org, Deck.Toys, Powtoons, and many others to create interactive and engaging content.
